After observing a few posts on friend’s walls lately, I was moved to write this post.    It is really so important that you think before you post.   If you are taking a day off work – and there is a picture of you having a lovely long weekend, it really doesn’t go down well.   Even though your boss might not be on your facebook – other colleagues might be and it doesn’t take much to copy a photo and distribute it by email, twitter or facebook all over the place.   Worse still if it is one of you passed out drunk!    How does that sit with your clients if you told them that day that you were flat out and couldn’t deliver… well yes.. flat out.. passed out!  Perhaps not quite what they would like to see.

Remember too that what you post can be seen by many – think about it –  those posts may be retreived later and come back to bite you.   Think about whether you need to use social media or whether other avenues would be better.   Whether you have just had a really bad day at work, or  you have just sacked someone, it is probably best not to mouth off about it, or worse still, offer their job up before they even know it – it’s  unfair on their reputation and doesn’t really make you look good either.    These days there seems to be a  lack of  common decency –  almost everyone I have ever spoken to, doesn’t like it if they have someone post something negative on their wall – but quickly forget when they are having a bad day.

I see a lot of bad posting when people have a relationship breakdown – young people putting each other down and making rather nasty statements and accusations.  As much as some may be true, it can say a lot more about the person posting it, than it does about the person they post about.

The online world can be an amazing place, full of vibrant conversation, discussion and debate – but keep it in perspective, always read back what you have written before you  post, and never post in anger.
